Formulation Development...

True innovation can only be achieved when research and development are backed by strong application experience. UV Research & Technology in co-operation with Allied Photo Chemicals offers just that, a unique and specialized service in a singular discipline only – UV coatings, inks and adhesives – and in this lies our strength.

Today’s successful coating scientists have unique skills including a thorough understanding of the chemistry and interactions involved in the selection of oligomers, pigments, additives, and monomers, to design high performance and cost-effective photo sensitive formulations

In the past, coating development was mostly driven by environmental regulations and energy costs. The future of protective and decorative coatings is in the combination of judicious selection and incorporation of the newest technologies.

Formulation development begins by identifying the need why a coating will be required and the criteria that coating has to meet. Is the coating to be developed for decorative purposes only or is it used for protection against corrosion, chemicals or impact ? Does the substrate have a surface energy above 40 dyne or is it an inert molecular structure? Is the coating to provide flexibility or hardness? Is the coating best applied by spray application or another method?

Factors such as those determine the core oligomer that may be best suited for such application. Once defined, the desired properties have been identified, and options to achieve those properties have been established, and the preferred application method has been considered, formulation development can begin. More than one formulation approach may be taken to provide similar coating properties.

Next, coating experiments are now performed to study the key parameters. Those experiments may be performed in our own laboratory or be carried out by you the client. Outside test facilities can provide independent test verification.

Once the coating formulation has been established, tested and verified, additional production related research might be required. Process conditions that were defined in the initial research work are scaled to a production level and process validation may be necessary. Process validation verifies and ensures product consistency at capacity levels.

At UV Research & Technology we go to great lengths to protect your proprietary information. We put a confidentiality agreement in place before a project begins, research and develop the formulation under the strictest technology protection, transfer the technology to you the client, and if required assist you in finding a coating company to formulate the coating for you.
